HELP's Glamour Girls
On a Thursday afternoon, 18 young women from HELP Genesis Homes in East New York entered the magazine mecca of 4 Times Square, the Conde Nast building, where Glamour is housed on the 17th floor. The young ladies were there for an afternoon of education on the magazine industry and they came prepared to learn.
Cindi Leive, the Editor in Chief of Glamour, spoke with the attendees about her life growing up with a single mother and her determination to go into the magazine business from a very young age. They also heard from the editor of the Glamour Fashion Do's and Don'ts page (at the back of the book. They learned about how the cover photo is chosen and the very involved process to get there. The girls heard from one of the lead writers who had a very similar upbringing to them. The speaker was from East New York herself and overcame many obstacles to get where she is today.
The young women asked questions and shared tea and cookies with over 20 Glamour staff members. They also were paired up with a staff person and taken on a tour of the Glamour offices - with the highlight being the clothes closet! They young women had an incredible experience and many handed resumes to Glamour staff that day and the days following. Hopefully some of them will be back at Glamour as more than guests someday soon.
