The HELP Supportive Employment Center (HELP-SEC) at Wards Island houses 200 homeless single adults who must be either employed or employable. The program focuses on pairing clients with appropriate housing and vocational training resources and opportunities with an ultimate goal of positioning clients for economic self-sufficiency and independent living. After-care services are provided for all clients who transition into housing for a minimum of six (6) months after discharge.
Key components of the employment program's success are low participant-to-instructor ratios, a project-based approach, and use of technology as both a means and an end. Participants utilize technology to facilitate learning and job readiness, and as a result, emerge computer literate.
